Oregon is Celebrating Its First City with a Month's Worth of Excitement!
Oregon is celebrating the 145th anniversary of its first city, Astoria, with the annual First City Celebration. This month-long event is packed with fun-filled activities and exciting opportunity for the entire community.
History of Astoria
Astoria was established in 1846 and is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. It was established as a fur trading post and eventually grew to be the thriving city it is today. It is a multifaceted location boasting a storied past, vibrant culture, and awe-inspiring scenery.
Celebrations
The First City Celebration will kick off at the beginning of June with the Astoria Regatta. This unique weekend event will feature a spectacular fireworks show and a parading of artistically designed paddleboats. The Academic Interclub Council at Clatsop Community College plans to also organize a Ship Parade featuring decorated sailing vessels.
Following the kick-off events, festivities will continue with a variety of activities throughout the month. There will be community service projects, guided tours through Astoria's landmarks and unique attractions, and special shopping and dining offers. Virtual programs and events– with topics ranging from art, history, and science to sports and recreation– will be hosted for those who cannot attend in person.
The celebration will come to a close with a massive outdoor festival in August. The Governors Hill Historic District will be transformed into an exciting playground for participants and spectators as they enjoy food stalls, rides, music, drama, and dancing.
