Section 8 housing is a federal housing assistance program that provides vouchers to low-income families and individuals to help pay their rent. It is administered by local public housing agencies (PHAs) through subsidies from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The Section 8 program allows eligible low-income families and individuals to pay a portion of their rent (based on their income) and the government pays the remaining portion. What Are The Eligibility Requirements?

What Is The Application Process?

The application process begins with the completion of the Section 8 application. This can be done online or in-person at your local PHA office. Once the application is submitted, it is reviewed by the PHA staff and then forwarded to HUD for final approval. The application must contain all of the necessary documents and information to be approved.

What Happens After Approval?

Once approved, you will receive a voucher in the mail which will entitle you to a subsidy for a certain amount of rent. It is important to note that the voucher will only cover the cost of monthly rent that does not exceed the maximum limit approved by HUD. Applicants must find a home that is approved by the PHA and in accordance with all Section 8 regulations and standards.

It is also important to note that you can still apply for Section 8 assistance even if you already have a home. The voucher amount can be used to help pay the current mortgage or rent.
